FAITH AND LEADERSHIP
How Faith Made Me a Better CEO: The Boardroom and the Bible
I open every major board meeting with prayer. Not because it is expected — because it sets the operating principle for what follows. The men in the room know what I answer to before I answer to the deal.
The Structural Advantage of Faith
The secular executive makes decisions in the context of: shareholder expectations, market conditions, competitive pressure, and personal ambition. The faith-first executive makes decisions in that context plus one additional filter: is this aligned with what God would have me do? That additional filter eliminates an entire category of decisions that are financially tempting but ethically corrosive.
Three Ways Faith Improved My Executive Performance
- Patience in negotiation. The man who answers to God is not in a rush in the same way the man who only answers to the quarterly P&L is. Patience in negotiation is a direct financial advantage. Some of the best deals I have done were the ones where I was willing to walk away and wait — a posture made possible by faith in the long game.
- Ethical clarity in pressure situations. When a deal is financially compelling but ethically questionable, the faith-first framework provides a clear answer. The secular framework provides a more complex calculation. Simpler decision architecture under pressure leads to better decisions.
- People development through servant leadership. I chair the board of IKON KIDS, a Christian children’s charity. That governance responsibility shapes how I lead at Ikon Group — with the understanding that leadership is stewardship, not ownership. The people who work for you are not assets. They are responsibilities.
Prayer Before the Agenda
Opening board meetings with prayer sets the order of priority for every decision that follows. See the full faith framework in The Faith Element: Why God First Makes Everything Else Work.
FAQ
Does faith-based leadership work outside faith-based organizations?
Yes — the discipline, humility, and integrity it builds apply regardless of what industry or boardroom you’re leading in.
