The Faith Element: Why God First Makes Everything Else Work
Every morning begins with 20-30 minutes of prayer and Scripture. Not as a ritual I perform before getting to the real work. As the source of the standard I hold in every other domain.
The Question That Started Everything
When I stood at 256 pounds with cardiac stents, the question that broke the logjam was not ‘How do I lose weight?’ It was: Am I being a good steward of what I’ve been given?
My body is not mine in the way that a possession is mine. It is entrusted to me. The capacity I have — to lead, to build, to father, to serve — runs through the physical vehicle I’ve been given. Treating that vehicle with negligence is not a matter of preference. It is a matter of faithfulness.
That framing changed everything. When transformation is a matter of stewardship rather than vanity, the motivation is of a fundamentally different quality. Stewardship is not contingent on how I feel. It is not contingent on whether my business is doing well. It is a constant obligation, and it is enough.
Faith and Performance Are Not Separate
The world separates faith and performance. I do not. The faith framework provides the answers to the questions that performance optimization cannot answer: Why does this matter? What is it for? What standard is high enough?
The secular performance world offers no ceiling. It is always more, always further, always a new metric to chase. Faith offers a different question: Am I being faithful with what I’ve been given? That question has a more satisfying answer — and it produces more sustained motivation than any external achievement can provide.

Why the Order Matters
Prayer and Scripture come before training, before the market opens, before anything else — because what comes first sets the standard for everything after it. See how this shows up in daily leadership in How Faith Made Me a Better CEO: The Boardroom and the Bible.
FAQ
How much time should a morning faith practice take?
Even 15-20 minutes of consistent prayer and Scripture before the day starts is enough to set the order of priority for everything that follows.
