Cardio vs Weights After 50: What Actually Works for Men

The cardio vs. weights debate is settled — and most men over 50 are getting it wrong. Here is the operator’s answer: both, sequenced correctly, designed around your schedule and recovery capacity.

Why the Debate Is the Wrong Question

Men over 50 asking “should I do cardio or weights?” are making a category error. The question is not OR — it is HOW MUCH of each, WHEN, and in what SEQUENCE. The man who only lifts is leaving cardiovascular health on the table. The man who only does cardio is accelerating muscle loss with every passing year.

The Operator’s Answer

  • Strength training is the foundation — 3 to 4 sessions per week. Compound movements drive testosterone, bone density, metabolic rate, and functional capacity. For men over 50, this is not optional. It is the most powerful anti-aging tool available.
  • Cardiovascular conditioning 2 to 3 sessions per week. Zone 2 cardio (conversational pace) for cardiac health and metabolic efficiency. Brief high-intensity intervals for hormonal signaling.
  • Jiu jitsu changes the equation. Jiu jitsu is simultaneously one of the most intense cardiovascular workouts and one of the most demanding strength and coordination challenges available. One session replaces both a cardio day and a significant mobility/coordination training day.

My Personal Training Stack

I train at 5:15 AM every morning. Some mornings it is weights — compound movements, progressive overload, focused on the patterns that maintain and build the physique of an executive operator. Some mornings it is jiu jitsu. The mat does not care about your portfolio. It only cares about your preparation.

It’s Not Either/Or

The real answer isn’t cardio versus weights — it’s heavy compound lifting as the foundation with walking as the metabolic supplement. See the full breakdown in 5 Compound Movements Every Man Over 45 Must Master.

FAQ

Should men over 50 do any cardio at all?
Yes — but low-intensity walking, not extra intense cardio sessions that compete with recovery from heavy lifting.
