Morning Routine
The 4:45 AM Morning Routine That Changed Everything
4:45 AM. No alarm arguments. No negotiations with myself about whether this is the day I sleep in. Here is exactly what happens in the first 3 hours of my day and why it makes everything else possible.
Why 4:45 AM?
The hour itself is not the point. The discipline is. I chose 4:45 AM because it gives me a protected block of time — before markets open, before phones ring, before the world’s demands arrive — to execute the four most important activities of my day in sequence and without interruption.
By 7:30 AM, my most important work is complete. I have already prayed, trained, reviewed markets, and studied. The rest of the day is execution in the world. The 4:45 AM block is execution in solitude, which is where the highest quality work actually happens.
The Protocol — Minute by Minute
- 4:45 AM — Prayer and Scripture. The first 20-30 minutes belong to God. No phone. No news. No markets. Scripture, prayer, and the alignment that makes everything else possible.
- 5:15 AM — Training. 55-70 minutes. Heavy compounds. Pre-workout coffee. No distractions. The phone is in do not disturb. This is the one hour where nothing else exists.
- 6:30 AM — Markets and business review. Crude oil pricing, portfolio review, news that affects Ikon Group operations. The operator never sleeps in on markets.
- 7:00 AM — Executive learning. Harvard coursework, MIT programs, reading that sharpens the thinking that runs the business.
- 7:30 AM — Available. The morning block is complete. I am showered, fed, trained, prayed-up, and positioned. Now I can meet the world.
What Most People Miss About Morning Routines
Morning routines are not about productivity hacks. They are about sequence. The sequence signals to your nervous system — and to everyone in your world — what your priorities actually are. Prayer before performance. Training before transactions. Learning before leading.
The sequence reflects the hierarchy. The hierarchy produces integrity — in the deepest sense of that word. The integration of what you say you value and what your actions demonstrate you value.
How I Protect the 4:45 AM Block
- Bedtime is 9:15 PM. Non-negotiable. Sleep is not sacrificed for the early wake time. The schedule shifted — not the total sleep duration.
- No decisions the morning of. Workout clothes laid out the night before. Coffee prepped on timer. Training program written in advance. Removing morning decisions removes friction that erodes discipline.
- Zero screens for the first 30 minutes. The first input of the day is Scripture, not social media. This distinction is more significant than it sounds.
